What is it?

Flash is a plugin from Adobe used primarily to create animations and provide multimedia support for web pages. With the advent of HTML5 and native support in browsers for animations, audio, and video the need for an external plugin has decreased.

Content in Flash-based websites was generally locked into place, and web-spiders, the tools used by search engines to index their listings, struggled to read the content of the closed Flash files.

Such deprecated functionality and lack of accessibility coupled with concerns about the security of the Flash plugin means it is now rarely used in modern-day websites.

Adobe will finally kill Flash in 2020.
